‘Degeneration’ may be a word your Chiropractor uses when explaining your care - But what does it mean?
Degeneration is commonly referred to as “wear and tear” in the body. In everyday life we build up tension, altered movement and dysfunction in our spine. Over time this causes our joints, muscles and ligaments to fatigue and “wear out”.
If left untreated, this may increase the pressure on areas of our spine and compound the abnormal forces that lead to weaknesses and inflammation. The first stages of degeneration involves the loss of the normal curves in our spine. At this stage some people may feel symptoms of pain (however most don't.)
Once degeneration has begun, our body then needs to compensate for these changes in the spine. If degeneration is still not addressed, our body may continue to wear and tear and eventually start forming calcium to stiffen and support these weak areas. Over time this may also affect the disc in between your vertebrae. Pain and loss of movement, as well as symptoms of nerve irritation are all common signs of spine degeneration.
What can you do to help your spine and prevent degeneration?
- Adjusting! Getting regular adjustments to help keep your spine moving and functioning at its best is really important in relieving the tension that builds up from daily activities and strengthening weak areas of the spine.
- Get moving! We all know how important movement is when it comes to maintaining a healthy life, but movement is also very important for your spine. Sitting for long periods of time, and poor posture, are habits that have been shown to negatively affect the spine. Getting up and moving once an hour is a good habit to have.
- Healthy diet! Having a balanced diet that includes calcium, vit D and C are all important in maintaining bone health.
